SHADYSIDE. Ellsworth Avenue sits in the midst of the Shadyside neighborhood and is a great place to shop, eat, and play. It's heavy with art galleries and also features local mainstay restaurants like The Elbow Room. Wander about and check out all the retailers and other attractions in this East End destination. DOWNTOWN. In the shadow of PPG Place and between Market Street and Forbes Avenue is Market Square. A cluster of restaurants and shops surrounds the square, metal benches dot the sidewalks, and there's even a little stage for outdoor performances. During the week, Market Square is a great place to people-watch, and during holidays like St. Patrick's Day and New Year's Eve, the square serves as a central location for festivities.

NORTH SIDE. German settlers developed the North Side, and their influence remains. Max's Allegheny Tavern, for instance, serves authentic German food and beers. The Grand Hall at the Priory ­ a banquet hall ­ occupies the former St. Mary's German Catholic Church. Although it's open only for special events, the Priory itself is a high-class bed and breakfast. A stay there will put you within walking distance of PNC Park, Heinz Field, the Andy Warhol Museum, Carnegie Science Center, the Mexican War Streets (where Gertrude Stein was born), and the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh.

SHADYSIDE. Most of the shopping in this high-end district, is concentrated along a 3-block stretch on Walnut Street. Retailers range from popular brands such as Banana Republic to less familiar specialty shops like Kards Unlimited and Four Winds Gallery. Delightful restaurants like Soba Lounge are located in this neighborhood as well.

SOUTH SIDE. In this historic neighborhood, East Carson is the key street for shopping and sightseeing. American Eagle Outfitters, Benetton and Cole Haan are among the area's well-know retailers, and there are also specialty shops that range from cigar stores to spas to music shops. Hungry visitors don't have far to walk, as there are many restaurants, such as Café Allegro, Thai Me Up, Primanti's and Le Pommier, along this busy street.
